活性物质是一类十分广泛存在的物质状态。在活性物质体系，个体单元可以将自由能能量转变为各种力学运动。这类物质体系在微观层次进行能量输入，突破体系能量瓶颈，从而驱动系统远离平衡态。同时个体的运动可以通过相互作用耦合在大尺度展现出极为惊人的集体动力学行为。这样的体系在自然界不胜枚举，像细胞骨架自组织行为，细胞迁移，组织生长，甚至动物群体的集体运动等都可以认为是活性物质体系集体动力学的一种体现。 

活性物质突破了物理学家对于物质体系能量输入的传统认识，处于统计物理、软物质物理、生物物理及流体力学等复杂非平衡体系交叉研究领域。我们小组一直以来主要发展活性物质体系的模拟和理论模型，包括细菌，细胞，细胞骨架，自驱动颗粒等相关模型体系的相变，集体动力学和自组织研究。 

目前集中开展的研究有： 
(1) 活性物质模型体系的相变及其动力学 
(2) 活性物质体系的拓扑结构和动力学 
(3) 活性物质体系的微观模型及其流体动力学方程理论 
(4) 细菌，胶体体系的理论计算及集体动力学
