PNAS Paper Published Online. Our group’s very first PNAS paper is finally online today! (https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.2202037119) What exciting news it is!!! For the past around 6 years, in our “spare time”, we enjoyed exploring a 2000-year-old artifact that is highlighted as a cover-page collection by the National Museum of China, revealing the ancient wisdom hidden in this national treasure, demonstrating the technological beauty beyond its artistic value. It is the painted bronze goose-and-fish lamp, one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in China. As usual, we took advantage of our knowledge of Chemical Engineering principles (i.e., Transport Theory), mathematical modeling and numerical simulation to accomplish the discovery.

We are excited to discover the underlying mechanism for the environmental protection function of this ancient bronze lamp, which has never been scientifically explained before. We are amazed by the ancient Chinese craftsmen who are capable of harnessing natural ventilation for air pollution control with an ingenious design 2000 years ago. Thanks to the curiosity of Prof. Xiao Dong Chen, whose museum visit years ago led to the initiation of this project. Curiosity is indeed the forerunner of discovery. One unique outcome of this work is the cultivation of a middle school student’s interests in Science and Engineering through participation in this interesting project. Flora Lanxin Xiao at Overseas Chinese Academy of Chiway Suzhou contributed to this work by creating a color painting of the lamp in her spare time. She earns an image credit in PNAS. Really hope she can actively take part in scientific research in the near future. Want to know more? Please enjoy reading the paper!

Exploring Mixing in Human Intestine – New Progress. Have you ever wondered why the inner wall of our intestine is not smooth, but rather demonstrating a multiscale hierarchical structure? How does this complex structure of the intestinal inner wall contribute to digestion and absorption? Recently, our group made small but exciting progress towards scientific answers to these important questions. From a unique chemical engineering perspective, and by resorting to Multiphysics modeling and simulation, we discovered that plicae circularis (i.e., circular folds) - submucosa protrudes can intensify both radial and axial mixing in the lumen by synergistically offering prominent and long-lasting swirls/vortices, high fluid velocity and high shear rates. This work entitled “The role of circular folds in mixing intensification in the small intestine: A numerical study” was accepted today by Chemical Engineering Science. It is an invited paper to be published in a special issue on “Multiscale Structures in Multiphase Process Intensification: from Fundamentals and Data to ApplicationsA Special Issue Celebrating the 2019 Danckwerts Lecture. It is a multidisciplinary joint effort with our long-term French collaborators in the International Associated Laboratory - FOODPRINT (Soochow University (China) - INRAE and Institut Agro (France)) (Prof. Romain Jeantet, Dr. Guillaume Delaplace and Dr. Didier Dupont) and gastroenterologists from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital (Dr. Jianyu Hao and Dr. Xinjuan Liu).
