RESEARCH INTERESTS

The Xiao lab’s research interests lie in the field of multiscale systems science and engineering. Dr. Xiao is specialized in mathematical modeling, numerical simulation and bio-inspired optimization, focusing on revealing quantitatively from macro to micro-scale the intricate interactions in complex systems.

The applied studies are listed below.

Bio-inspired Chemical Engineering

Understanding biological systems from a unique chemical engineering perspective, the phenomena of interest include the tropism in plants, ciliary motility of corals, eyelashes’ function, etc.

Understanding the digestive system by resorting to chemical engineering principles and multiscale modeling and simulation approaches

Modeling and design of Soft Elastic Reactors (SERs): inspired by the digestive system, this research is aimed at invention of novel SERs that can out-perform conventional agitated reactors

Particle Engineering and Technology

Multiscale modeling of the spray drying systems

Fouling and Cleaning

Multiscale modeling of the multistage fouling process

Functional Coatings Design and Manufacturing

Design and manufacturing of automotive coatings

Design of anti-icing aircraft coatings

TEACHING

Quality Course

Principles of Chemical Engineering

Awarded as Provincial-level Quality Course for International Students since 2016

SUDA Course Number09041017

Credits: 4

Level: undergraduate

Open to: 3rd Year students in the Intensive Training Classes* (both Chemistry and Engineering) and oversea students (工程强化班和化学强化班学生及留学生)

*Each year, from all freshmen of the college, about 10% of them will be rigorously selected to form the intensive training class. The curriculum is specially designed and all key courses are taught in English.
